Architect to Notaro Care Homes for the development of a 52-bedroom integrated care home for older people located on a greenfield site adjacent to Martock, a historic market village on the edge of the Somerset levels.
The form, scale and materiality of the care home purposely integrate the building with its sensitive setting and minimise its visual impact: three discrete blocks, two single-storey bedroom blocks and a two-storey block of support accommodation linked by glazed walkways, all with shallow-pitched green roofs. Each block has its own relationship to the topography and together form an informal arrangement reminiscent of pragmatically-sited buildings on a hillside, the intention being to create a certain rural atmosphere at the interface of Martock with the open countryside to its north-east.
The innovative bedroom blocks have rooms (with direct access to their own external patio areas) arranged around a higher communal dining and living space which is top-lit.
