Conservation of Redford Barracks

Watson Burnett Architects

To rectify inherent problems with the fabric of 33 buildings in Redford Barracks. The main problems included failing external stonework; water ingress and improvements to the ablutions and catering facilities.

The works were carried out within the one contract DE partnering Agreement and were carried out in planned programmed phases.

The type of works that were carried out were:

  • Replacement slate roof covering and repairs to flat roofs
  • Stonework repairs; replacement lead flashings and rainwater good review
  • Repair/replace windows, cupolas and doors
  • Provide new kitchen and ablutions

The main drivers for the conservation works was to maintain/conserve the buildings in a manner which satisfied the Local Authority, Historic Scotland and the requirements of the Army. All building works had to be carried out and planned without interfering with the operations of the Barracks.
