The existing house is a nineteenth century cottage linked to a modern conversion of a former stable and smithy. The buildings are set into a hillside against a retaining wall with a west-facing garden on the slope above.
Initially, the client sought designs for two new porches to shelter the east-facing entrances. The brief has been expanded to include remodelling of the converted building to take greater advantage of the western light, improve thermal efficiency and provide a closer relationship between the internal living spaces and the garden.
