The brief was to design a practical, timeless, five bedroom family house with as low a carbon footprint as the budget could accommodate. The clients wanted to retain as much of the existing mature landscaping as possible. Purcell allowed the site's excellent orientation to dictate a synthesis of simple spaces grouped around an open core of hall, landing, living room and kitchen. The house is highly insulated, heated with an air-source heat pump and has an array of solar PV cells on the roof.
