Peter Drummond, Architect Ltd. have been retained by Friends of Portencross Castle and Gray, Marshall & Associates to act as executive architects for consolidation of an Ayrshire landmark made famous on the last series of the BBCs Restoration.
Dating from the early 13th century and a frequent stopping point for the medieval kings of Scotland, Portencross Castle is one of the countrys most unusual tower houses with a unique double-kitchen. It incorporates the remains of an early hall house, including a surprisingly intact great hall at first floor level.
Since 1999, Peter has been advising the Friends on the various ways in which they could save the Castle including advice on historical and architectural value, different technical solutions, and the financial options available. The Friends were particularly keen to maintain the partially ruinous profile of the building whilst making the interior available for interpretation and events.
