Kilmarnock Townscape Heritage Initiative

Peter Drummond Architect

Peter Drummond, Architect provided specialist conservation advice to East Ayrshire Council as part of the development and implementation of the Kilmarnock John Finnie Street and Bank Street Conservation Area Regeneration and Townscape Heritage Initiative schemes.

Kilmarnock’s industrial wealth has left it with a range of fine streets and buildings, however the closure of most of the heavy industry and consequent economic decline over the last 30 years has placed much of this important built heritage at risk. Recognising that action was required, the Council commissioned Peter’s team at Austin-Smith: Lord to undertake a series of studies looking at how best to regenerate the town centre with respect for its architectural and historical value.

Following the creation of his practice, the Council asked Peter to continue this role, and recent work has included bringing forward detailed guidance including appraisal of applications for assistance, the provision of design guidance, development of supplementary guides for owners and their agents, and running a series of CPD events.
