Nicoll Russell Studios were initially appointed by West Lothian Council to consider an amenity "village" in Bathgate which would include sheltered housing, a dementia care facility, a private care home and a new build "housing with care" development. The latter has been progressed and delivered via Hub South East with Nicoll Russell Studios as Architects and Interior Designers. As a "dementia friendly" development, it has involved extensive research into dementia and whole life housing, including consultation with Stirling University's Dementia Services Development Centre, reference to exemplar developments throughout Europe, and Design Guidance from a variety of published sources.
This regeneration of a brownfield site close to the town centre (with extensive remediation works addressing old mine-workings), provides 30 new Dementia Friendly Housing-with-Care flats for West Lothian Council, together with a central Hub of shared facilities. The latter also serves existing Housing for Older People developments nearby, as well as public visits and use, to encourage a socially inclusive heart to the development.
