The challenge was to form a vibrant new quarter in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. The development combined the rehabilitation of nine historic former city council buildings, spread over 11 storeys and bridging two closes, with the re- opening of closed-off streets to increase pedestrian movement through the site.
Internally, floor layouts were reworked to accommodate serviced apartments on the upper levels. All were designed so that living spaces are bright and spacious with views across a public open space or Edinburgh’s spectacular skyline. The street level accommodates a variety of commercial units. The material palette attempted to unify the many disparate external elements.
