The brief comprised two distinct elements; 3000sqm of higher education teaching space and approximately 300 student residences. Driven by our contextual analysis our approach was to create two legible and separate buildings on the site with a sheltered landscaped courtyard connecting the two. The teaching building is a monolithic stone "cube"; it's prow and entrance defined by two, sleek, cantilevered glass projections. The residences are located to the rear of the site and create a solid edge to Kyle Street; using a classically influenced 'double order' facade to create tall, slender openings the residences are intended to help repair the fractured urban grain of the area.
