Work included meticulous research and survey work that led to the careful repair of buildings using an “as much as necessary but as little as possible approach”. New estate infrastructure was installed as well as the consolidation of garden buildings and the conversion of the Stables to accommodate visitor facilities and offices and housing for estate staff. Newhailes opened to the public to wide acclaim on 1 June 2002. In 2003 it won the RIBA Conservation Project of the Year
