The flagship project, situated at the gateway to Galloway Forest Park, is the first phase in a roll out programme of 5 new visitor centres across the country for Forestry Commission Scotland. The striking design takes its cues from the surrounding landscape and the external material palette adopted ensures that it remains a contemporary and stimulating piece of design while blending with its rural woodland context. To take advantage of the sweeping views, the centreÍs programme has been arranged linearly, with a large cafe placed front and centre. Modulated roof forms run the length of the building and not only funnel an abundance of natural light into the centre from above but comprise part of the ventilation strategy: through the continual monitoring of data from sensors within the building, vents in the roof will open and close automatically to create a comfortable environment for visitors throughout the year.
