James GillespieÍs Campus is located in Marchmont, Edinburgh, within the listed boundary walls of Bruntsfield House, a Grade A listed tower house. The site occupies approximately 3.7 hectares and the campus provides educational, sports, leisure and community facilities. The campus approach and design of the new High School was conceived as a response to the urban constraints and opportunities presented by a unique site together with a forward thinking Strategic Educational Design Brief. Given the sensitive location and specific client requirements, we undertook extensive consultation with community groups, historic societies and the community council at a very early stage to ensure that all concerns were addressed. We also developed a 12-stage decant process that retained all teaching environments on site throughout construction and minimised the need for any temporary accommodation.
