Glasgow School of Art - Reid Building

jmarchitects

jmarchitects with Steven Holl Architects were selected from 150 entrants, following an international design competition, to design and deliver the prestigious new Glasgow School of Art building, opposite Charles Rennie Mackintosh's famous Garnethill landmark in Glasgow's city centre. The multi-award winning design not only reflects the unique character and aspiration of the Glasgow School of Art as a cultural institution, but creates a vibrant hub for the campus and a daily point of contact between the three branches of the school. The thin translucent faade, arranged in distinct volumes that directly relate to the unique internal programme and each spaceÍs requirement for natural light, sits in considered contrast to the historic stone faade of the Mackintosh building and creates a symbiotic relationship in which each structure heightens the core qualities of the other.
