The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory

GD Lodge Architects LLP

Sitting within the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, the observatory evokes traditional rural and agricultural forms but has been designed to accommodate state of the art astronomical equipment and educational resources. The superstructure is an exceptionally well insulated timber frame and Scottish larch cladding is expressed in both horizontal and vertical boarding, left untreated to fade to a silver grey. Power is generated by photovoltaic panels, heat by a wood-burning stove and waste water is returned to the landscape after treatment in a reed bed. This is an exemplary sustainable building which touches its surroundings only lightly.
