In this former rural school we created imaginative living spaces within the large volume of the schoolroom (with additional accommodation in the adjoining schoolhouse). A progression of levels, from the ground-floor kitchen, through a partially raised full-height livingroom and up to a semi-enclosed sleeping platform, maximises available space and creates dramatic contrast between the different spaces. Separating the new structure from the external walls gave prominence to the high schoolroom windows and maintained a sense of the building's original spacial quality. This enhanced the low-ceilinged kitchen and sleeping areas, creating visual connections and a sense of height, while retaining privacy.
