David Murray Associates

£15m research laboratory and office building for the University of Aberdeen completed in 2 phases. This commission was won in competition partly due to the green approach to design which maximised natural ventilation and high daylight levels. The concept was for a research 'hotel' where research teams might expand and contract depending on funding availability. Flexibility was one of the main priorities. The design is based on a unique arrangement of double height labs flanked by double stacked offices and write up areas. The lofty central atrium provides the major spatial feature and social hub for the building.
