The Silver Fin Building

Cooper Cromar

The Silver Fin is a 130,000 sqft Grade ‘A’ Office development located at the centre of Aberdeen’s Business District.

The design delivers a four-storey ‘townhouse’ scale building mass to Union Street with a ten-storey tower to Justice Mill Lane. It comprises a four-storey ‘tripartite’ composition reflective of the original Georgian plots, with flanking ‘lanterns’ about a central composition.

To the rear of the site a ten-storey tower contains office accommodation, enveloped in predominantly glazed elevations with a granite ‘superframe’ overlay with anodised aluminium ‘Silver Fins’.

Externally the elevation to Union Street is formed in indigenous ‘Craigenlowe’ granite.

The finest materials have been used inside to complement the external elements. Polished granite has been used in the reception hall interspersed with vertical timber fin lightboxes, and contemporary granite, grey oak veneers and nero assoluto granite has been specified in the washrooms.

The building has achieved an EPC ‘A’ rating and BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. This has been achieved through the design of a thermally efficient envelope, efficient VRV heating and cooling system and LED lighting throughout.

The Silver Fin Building has played a transformational role in the regeneration of this area of Aberdeen, providing a sensitive and considered response to the adjacent former Capitol Cinema and has been delivered to the most exacting of standards.
