The challenge in this Local Plan development site, on the edge of the historic village of Coldingham, was to improve on the kind of ïcould be anywhereà additions often found in Borders villages whose distinctively sturdy urban structures have long been ignored as an urban design template. A vigorous placemaking agenda is employed with active frontages shaping a public realm of street, green, square, with crafted street design, to overcome the dominance of vehicles over pedestrians. Greater house numbers (87 rather than 36 envisaged in the Local Plan) helps achieve a series of connected and contrasting ïplacesà bestowing identity, character and a sense of natural legibility; a ïpiece of villageà as opposed to a mere area of ïhousingÃ.
