Extension of Laurelhill Gardens

Bobby Halliday Architects

Given the large garden and south facing aspect, the existing rooms on this elevation – kitchen, dining and rear of the lounge – offered little connection into the garden. The existing house sat 4 steps higher than ground level, so the new garden room has been used to step the floor levels down to the garden. Ceiling height has been maintained throughout, with the result that the garden room has higher ceilings than the existing ground floor. The interplay of changing level, height and light from the large glazed screens creates an interesting dynamic missing from the original layout.
