Faced with a sloping site for this new housing development in Ayrshire, the architects decided to construct a row of narrow frontage, deep plan houses fronting the road. The change in level across the site was such that each house steps up the slope by 600mm. The majority are two-bedroom with hall, kitchen, bathroom and lounge in a deep plan pitched roof wing linked to the adjacent house with a shallow pitched roof bedroom wing.
The shallow pitch link accommodates the changes in floor level. The variation in depth between the living room/kitchen wing and the bedroom wing provides a south-facing, sheltered rear garden and a small, paved, semi-private court at the entrance.
