Recently completed, the new development for Highgate Junior School pays homage to the Schools passion and long-term commitment to achieving excellence in education, creating a forward looking, ambitious and inspirational learning environment with spaces to encourage creativity and ingenuity.
The scheme incorporates an inviting entrance and well orientated layout, coupled with a continuous connection to the established landscape and a strong civic presence on the historical street, for which the school has been situated for nearly 80 years.
The heart of the school is a generous, naturally lit circulation space, providing shared learning zones, exhibition space, and areas for informal performance, animated by a selection of quality materials and hand carved sculptures to re ect the schools interest in the natural world.
In addition to the standard classrooms, which run a crescent form along the west façade, are specialised teaching areas, including an art studio, science labs and a workshop. The performing arts department is in the retro tted Ingleholme building, a restored Victorian villa, which proudly remains a dominant and in uencing lynch-pin of the design.
Detailed to Passivhaus principles, the reinforced concrete framed building is designed to a 100 year lifecycle, BREEAM Excellent and includes an array of roof mounted PVs, providing 20% of its energy.
