The Dutch Barn

Acanthus Architects df

The conversion of an existing steel frame Dutch Barn to form this new house is part of the enabling development for the restoration of the 1757 John adam Palladian Wardhouse Mansion.

The Dutch Barn was redundant for its original purpose as an agricultural storage barn. The original, utilitarian steel structure of the Dutch Barn, bought as a kit and erected in 1993 has been retained and a new, highly insulated, timber frame constructed about it. The approach to this conversion has been to make the ordinary extraordinary and to create an exemplar of economic and sustainable re-use.
