This research and teaching facility is located within a refurbished and extended, category B listed, former high school. The brief required a refurbished teaching space, lecture facilities, meeting rooms, staff offices and a student hub and café to make better use of two lost 18th-century buildings.
The existing structures lacked a sense of cohesion and circulation was not clear. By removing the linking stair it was possible to create generous central circulation. This is the first listed building to achieve BREEAM Outstanding (at design stage), with construction stage being assessed.
