Redevelopment of St Martin’s Church

Ian Springford Architects

The original St Martin’s Church was demolished and the challenge was to replace it with a smaller version, more suited to the congregation’s current and future needs. The rest of the site was being developed for housing and flats.

Positioned in the most prominent part of the site, the massing of the church reconciles the single storey bungalows to the west with the four-storey flats to the east. The taller, monopitch of the sanctuary sweeps up to the block of flats to the west.

Photovoltaic panels on the church roof power lighting and heat in the building.
