Sir Duncan Rice Library

schmidt hammer lassen architects

This is a 21st century learning and research environment for students, university staff, visitors and the public. The competition brief asked for a magnificent academic library for science and research; a library, a meeting place engaging the local community and a landmark.

The heart of the library is a bright spiralling atrium connecting all eight storeys, a dynamic vortex which contrasts with the clean-cut exterior profile. The building also offers great views over the city of aberdeen, the surrounding countryside and sea. The façade shimmers during the day and glows softly at night, a luminous new landmark for aberdeen.
