A robust committee structure underpins the Incorporation's governance. Each committee has considered and agreed discrete remits and overarching Terms of Reference are in place to ensure that committees are of sufficient size to be representative but contained in number to ensure effectiveness, that meetings are tightly timetabled to respect the valuable voluntary contribution of members' time, that meetings are quorate and that committee membership is 'refreshed' on agreed cycles.


Conservation Committee

Formulation of RIAS policy, building and maintaining beneficial relationships with all key conservation organisations, advising on conservation priorities and best practice, promotion and overseeing of RIAS Conservation and Sustainability accreditation. More

Contracts Committee

Promoting the use of standard forms of building contract, working with SBCC in the best interests of Scottish architects, ensuring that the interests of members and clients and their insurers are met through encouraging standard forms of contract. More

Education Committee

Enhancing the relationship between the Incorporation and students / young professionals. Improving links with schools of architecture through the Association of Scottish Schools of Architecture (ASSA) and direct contact. Promoting awareness of built environment issues and general education about architecture, influencing policy at all levels, coordinating careers advice between the schools of architecture and the profession. Fostering practice-based research and development and continuing professional development. More

Planning Committee

Reviewing draft documentation from outside bodies and proposed policy, to promote chartered architects' skills and experience, to enhance understanding of Environment, Town Planning and Housing issues through practice information and to support best practice in Planning and Housing . More

Government Committee

To promote the role of the Incorporation and the profession to Government at all levels, to serve as a conduit for local authority employees to communicate matters of concern, to strengthen and support the role and influence of the RIAS in procurement and enhance the role of design-based competitions in Scotland .More

Practice Committee

To oversee practice matters including adjudication, appointments, building regulations, contracts, fees, health and safety, liability, planning, practice management, practice services, professional indemnity insurance and sustainability / environmental issues. Also to oversee the Directory, RIAS technical CPD, the Clients' Advisory Service and RIAS Consultancy. More
